A tornado ran through the town in 1921 that demolished buildings, killed 13, and injured 54. Later in 1929, a fire destroyed many of the buildings that had had just been rebuilt after the tornado. During the same time, the Great Depression was wreaking havoc in the community, and the population dropped to 500; however, Melissa persevered. After all of their trials and tribulations, Melissa is now a picturesque community.
