Zilker is a historic neighborhood in South Austin, Texas first founded under a 35-acre deed in 1918 by philanthropic political figure, Andrew Jackson Zilker. Twice distinguished as Austin's “Most Worthy Citizen,” Zilker contributed a great deal to the city of Austin, from public schools, wood and coal mills, and water supply systems, to even the city's very first Coca-Cola bottling plant! Perhaps the neighborhood's most well-known gem is the large park whose land was donated by and named after Zilker.

Zilker Park was developed in the 1930s, during the height of the Great Depression, and consists of 350 acres of land. The park is home to the Zilker Botanical Garden, the Austin Nature & Science Center, the beautiful and curious Umlauf Sculpture Garden, the Barton Springs Pool, and the Zilker Hillside Theater, among other attractions. Every winter, the Zilker Holiday Tree is decorated and lit by 3,000 colored lights, which has remained a regular tradition since 1967. Perhaps most famously, the park hosts the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, which runs two consecutive weekends in October (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.) The festival brings in almost close to half of a million attendees each year and has inspired other music festivals in Auckland, New Zealand as well as Sydney, Australia.
