The community of El Campo was originally a railroad camp called “Prairie Switch” and “Pearl of the Prairie.” Later on, the Mexican Cowboy changed the name to “El Campo,” which stands for the camp. In 1905 El Campo was incorporated with a municipal government, which included a mayor and five council members. The mayor of El Campo was Mr. Mack Webb, W.C McDonald was our first city attorney, W. E. Franz was the first city secretary, and members of the first council were H.G. Bear, E.L. Correll, and W.W Duson.1 El Campo eventually established a formal government, police protection and a fire department full of volunteers. Years later, El Campo became a progressively growing city with citizens utilizing our resources.
