Boswell's grandson, Reuben B. Weddington was key in putting the town on the map, and the town adopted his namesake as its own. Up until the 1970's, Weddington was a largely farming driven community, but as Charlotte began to grow, people began to move into the area and farm lands turned into subdivisions.
