Along the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach County lies the charming town of Hypoluxo. Located halfway between West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, Hypoluxo is a small community that in 2004 had just under 3,000 residents. The name Hypoluxo comes from Seminole dialect in which the name translates to “water all ‘round, not get out.” The town is compact, encompassing a total area of 0.8 square miles—0.2 of which is water.

Interestingly, the small town has a large population from Finland, and in the 2000 census revealed that Finnish was more common in the town than Spanish, which is widely spoken in South Florida. Hypoluxo also has a large amount of Canadian residents—the 12th highest in the United States in fact. That is a lot of cultural diversity for such a small area.

Hypoluxo has an interesting claim to fame, with history sharing that the area was home to the “Barefoot Mailman,” back before roads and railways were developed and there was no way to get to Miami on land other than by foot, which round trip was six days. This was established as the Star Mail Route in 1885, and the mail delivery process was a dangerous one—it is believed that a mailman lost his life to alligators or sharks near the beaches where he walked.

Hypoluxo is a close knit community on the outskirts of Boynton Beach, FL. Outdoor spaces such as the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area and Garnett Park which are both great representations of the town's history and creation.
