Texas is known for its sunny weather and elevated temperatures. However, the Texas winter storm has shown just how cold this southern state can get. Unless you've lived in the northern United States, you probably weren't prepared for the snow and may not know how to prevent water pipes from bursting in cold weather. All My Sons Moving & Storage is here to help you deal with the aftermath of pipes bursting in your home.

What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

Turn Off Water Supply

When you realize you have a burst pipe, the first thing you should do is turn off your home's main water supply. This will prevent further water damage and save money on repairs. Of course, you'll need to call a professional plumber to fix the pipe, but turning off the water supply is the best immediate course of action. If you live in a house, you can usually find the water valve in the front yard or the garage. If you live in an apartment, you should notify your apartment manager to learn how to turn off the water main supply.

Drain Your Faucets

Pipes burst in cold temperatures because water expands when it freezes. To ensure no more pipe bursting, drain the remaining water. This means running the faucets, both cold and hot, and flushing the toilets.

Call a Plumber

During the winter, pipe bursting is a common problem, so be sure to call a plumber as soon as you can to get on the list before anyone else. Scheduling an appointment will also help reduce stress. You can rest easy knowing a professional is on their way to assess and fix the problem. Our dedicated movers recommend asking for any tips or tricks that will help before the plumber arrives.

Stay Away From the Wreckage

Be careful when you're near the damage. It's impossible to know the extent of the water damage, and debris could fall even after you've turned off the water supply. Ceiling damage is especially dangerous because it could cause the ceiling to collapse. It's important to steer clear of the wreckage until a professional deems it safe.

Document Any Damage

If you can take pictures of the water damage without putting yourself at risk, be sure to do so. Photos will come in handy when you submit a claim to your insurance company. It's normal to want to clean up what you can, but document the damages before anything is moved or changed.
