Knoxville Breast Cancer Events

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and there is no shortage of things to do in order to show your support while living in Knoxville. If you are new to the Knoxville area and are looking to help create awareness for breast cancer research, here are some of Knoxville's top breast cancer awareness events, and even some out-of-the-box ideas on how to lend a helping hand.

  • KNIA/KRLS Breast Cancer Awareness Save-A-Life Radiothon: This unique event is celebrating its eighth year and is hosted at Knoxville Hospital and centers. Throughout the day, women can come in and get mammograms while The Big Red Radio from KNIA/KRLS live-broadcasted the event. The popular radio station is credited with helping get the word out with their daily broadcasts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The broadcast is also very informative, interviewing breast cancer survivors and health care professionals. If you are a part of the recommended age group for yearly mammograms, you can follow KNIA/KRLS to whichever location is best for you, get your free check-up, and be part of the voices creating breast cancer awareness.

  • The Annual Mission Mammography event: The first Wednesday of October is when Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center gives out free mammograms to the first 107 women who come in and do not have health insurance. If you are over the age of 40, have a low budget, do not have health insurance, or know someone who does not have insurance, this is the perfect opportunity to get checked for breast cancer and alleviate the fear of cost.

  • Annual Kim Rowden Memorial Gold Tournament: The Kim Rowden fund allows women with little or no resources to receive breast care, including: mammographic screenings, diagnosis, and any necessary treatment. Kim Rowden was a 25 year-old who was diagnosed with breast cancer and whose biggest talent was golf. After battling cancer for three years, Rowden passed away. Her breast cancer played an important roles in the detection of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These genes are the only two to have ever been found in the human genome, that link to breast cancer. Participants can either make a donation to the fund, be a sponsor, or register a team into the tournament.

  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: this national event has a Knoxville outlet and is part of one of the largest nation-wide efforts to find a cure for breast cancer. The Making Strides of Knoxville event typically takes place at World's Fair Park the first week of October. Dedicate your day and help create breast cancer awareness, one stride at a time.
