What to Watch Out for When House Shopping

Whether you are a first time home buyer or are an experienced homeowner, buying a new house can be both thrilling and frustrating. Sometimes it may seem like the whole world has conspired against you when you find a home that you like, only to be thwarted in the buying process. Other times you may have no luck at all searching for the basic home necessities within your price range.

No matter what your situation is, there are a few very important things you should be wary of as you go house shopping. You may be pressed for time in which to find a home, but you do not want to make a decision that you will come to regret. If you choose wisely, you will be calling Raleigh movers before you know it to transport your things to your wonderful new house.

Masked Smells

Many people light a fragrant candle as part of the staging process. A gentle scent is a good way to make potential buyers feel more at home, especially if it is a food-scented candle like sugar cookies or apple pie. A light smell is fine, but if you ever notice that there is a pervasive smell of air fresheners throughout the home, there might be an underlying problem.

As houses age, they can develop bad smells. Many people associate a particular smell with “old people.” What you may not know is that it isn't old people that make that smell, it is old flooring. Especially in antique homes that are 40 years old or older, the wood beneath the carpet could be rotting, making the rooms smell musky no matter how well a person cleans. This smell can be removed permanently only when the flooring underneath the carpet is replaced. This could become extremely expensive. If you cannot afford such a home repair project, avoid houses that emit a strong scent.

Preexisting Pest Condition

A good step to take if you are seriously considering making an offer on a house is to have it inspected for pests, harmful chemicals, and mold. You may need to spend a few hundred dollars to have a comprehensive test performed, but if any of the test results turn up positive, you may want to reconsider purchasing the house or use the presence of pests as a bargaining chip to reduce the price of the house.

Although not a living pest, there are some homes that have been used as meth labs. Living in a house that was once used to cook meth can cause serious and potentially deadly side effects. You should never buy a house that was used as a meth lab; the risk of developing illness is too great.

Missing Your Move-In Deadline

If you are absolutely unable to find a good, affordable house in time for your possessions to be moved in, don't sweat it. Just call your Raleigh movers and rent a storage space. Try finding an apartment that you can lease month-to-month. Once you have found the home of your dreams, call the movers, have your things brought out of storage, and start unpacking them at your new home!
