History of Fenton

Fenton was founded on March 23, 1818 by William Lindsay Long and named after his Welsh grandmother, Elizabeth Fenton Bennett. Fenton had original plans to consist of eight square blocks divided into 80 small lots. Today though, these old plans are now what called, “Olde Towne Fenton,” a town that was originally founded in 1874.1

Many years later, Fenton grew and expanded. The surrounding area began to see a lot more people and the population and number of businesses began to increase. It was then on March 9, 1955 when Fenton reincorporated and was classified as a Fourth-Class City. Our town held its first election for a new Mayor and other city officials. With these new plans to be named “new city,” the residents voted in favor of an “annexation plan consisting of 1,500 acres of land surrounding the original eight blocks to create the City of Fenton.”1

Fenton today currently covers an area of 5.5 miles and is located in St. Louis County.1 While our town continues to grow and provide for its residents, it still remains one of the best-kept secrets in Missouri.
