Tips for an Organized Laundry Room

By design, the laundry room is a tricky area to maintain organization—with a constant influx of dirty clothing and several detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets the often small area can get overwhelmed quickly. If your laundry room has existing shelving, you want to take full advantage of the space that you have been allotted. If you don’t have any or much shelving, then it is time to add some organizational elements. Big bin stores like Home Depot and Target have ready assembled shelving units and options that you can easily use to maximize the space in your laundry room. This will be the place where you store detergent, fabric softener, bleach, stain sticks, OxiClean, dryer sheets, and any other products that you use on your clothing. Additional shelving can also hold a mini steamer and iron, so that all your appliances are organized as well.

In addition to a shelving unit, you want a place where you can hang freshly pressed clothing, and also to hang wet clothing that is too delicate to go in the dryer. If you have a rack over the dryer, this is a common use for it. If you don’t have one, you can purchase a small rolling rack for these pieces to dry. While some people may not think they can benefit from a rolling rack, almost everyone can. You will likely have more use for it than you realize.

Dirty laundry can pile up quickly, and then you’ll have to go through and sort it before you can wash a load. Cut this process down by sorting dirty clothes as they are tossed in your laundry room. Have one wicker basket for whites, and one for colors, and an additional one for towels, sheets, and any other linens.
