Keep Costs Low While Moving

Your new home isn't the only thing that should be on your budget's radar. Moving expenses can be costly. Between packing, gas, shipping belongings and paying for storage can add up. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce the amount of money you spend, from hiring the right Jacksonville movers to packing your items in previously used boxes.

The Right Stuff

One of the first things you can do is sort through your possessions to see which items you can part with. These things will fall into three categories: sell, donate or trash. You may consider having a garage sale before you leave. That can help you get rid of excess items while at the same time putting a little money in your pocket. Try to donate or recycle items you cannot sell and dispose of everything else at the appropriate facility.

Getting rid of all the extra “stuff” means you have less to take to your home. If you are planning on packing and moving yourself, fewer things means less work for you. If you hire Jacksonville movers, it may mean saving money, as some moving companies calculate your charges based on the total weight of your move.

Packing Up

While many Jacksonville movers offer to pack for you, you can save a little money if you do it yourself. You will need to collect boxes and bags to hold your belongings. You can purchase new boxes, which will be durable and come in all sizes and styles to suit your needs. If you want to spare a few dollars, you can contact grocery stores and business offices and ask to have their old boxes. Managers typically have no problem giving these away, as they are usually thrown in the garbage or recycling.

Packing materials can be expensive. Bubble wrap and packing paper will undoubtedly keep your fragile items safe, but those costs can quickly add up. Instead, you can pad boxes with linens, towels and clothes. Newspaper can work great on some items, but it can smudge dishes and other valuables. Lastly, box up any odd-sized items. It will save the movers time if it is in a box because it is easier to move - and with most movers, time is money.

Deduct It

If you keep a record of your moving expenses, you may be able to deduct them on your federal income taxes. You are eligible for this deduction if, among other things, your new job location is at least 50 miles further from your home than your old job location was from your old home. Additionally, you must work full-time for at least 39 weeks following your move. If you are a member of the armed forces and your move was for a military order, you do not have to meet these requirements for the deduction.

A move can be expensive, but you can save some money with proper preparation. Get rid of items you don't need in your new home, selling whatever you can. Use old boxes and get creative with packing, which may help Jacksonville movers save time. Lastly, see if you qualify for a tax-deductible move. While these steps may be a bit more work on your part, they will pay off with lower moving costs.
