Questions to Ask Your Mover

You know there's more to finding a professional moving service than a good quote. Money matters, but so does the safe and efficient transport of your items. Find out questions to ask your potential mover to make sure you're getting the best deal.

Packing Questions for Your Mover

Find out if the moving company has any packing requirements. Moving companies can be very particular as a way to protect against liability. Find out the packing specifications before you hire the company, and well before moving day.

Ask Your Mover to Provide Documentation

Moving out of state? Your mover should be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association and have a U.S. Department of Transportation number. Request the registration numbers.

Evaluate the Mover's Rate

In general, a quote from the moving company is calculated by weight and distance. Long distance moves should have quotes based on the pound. If you're moving a shorter distance, it may be possible to get an hourly quote.

Ask about any fees relevant to your move that may not be included in the quote. Are there stairs involved? Does you have valuables that require special care? That may cost extra.

Get an Estimate From the Mover

The initial quote you receive online or over the phone is designed to give you a general idea of what you can expect to pay for a professional moving service. A good moving company will come to your home, determine the complexity of the job and provide you with an accurate estimate. Get an estimate that includes all fees in writing before you hire the mover.

Learn everything about the mover's insurance package. Know what's covered ahead of time. Be aware of any stipulations, terms and conditions. Depending on the value of an item, it may be necessary to take out additional insurance.

Research the Mover

Find out more about the company professional reputation before making your decision. A simple search online can tell you a lot about your prospective moving company. Ask around your circle of friends and neighbors, as well.
